Fresh Beginnings & Healthy Habits

Supporting Your Teen’s Successful Start

The beginning of a new school year offers families an important opportunity to help teenagers reestablish the routines and habits that support academic success and personal well-being. This transition can be especially significant for freshmen, who are adjusting to increased expectations, new relationships, greater independence, and a more demanding academic schedule. Parents can provide a steady foundation by helping their teens create consistent morning and evening routines, organize assignments, establish realistic goals, and prepare for each school day in advance. Healthy sleep patterns, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and appropriate limits on screen time are equally important because students perform at their best when their physical and emotional well-being are prioritized. Rather than attempting to manage every responsibility for them, parents can help teenagers break larger goals into manageable steps, recognize their progress, and gradually take greater ownership of their education.

Supporting a teenager at home also requires open communication, patience, and a willingness to listen without immediately trying to solve every problem. Families should establish regular opportunities to discuss academic responsibilities, friendships, extracurricular interests, and any concerns their teen may be experiencing while also respecting the student’s growing need for independence. If these conversations become difficult or communication begins to break down, your child’s school counselor is available to help facilitate a productive conversation and ensure that everyone feels heard and supported. Counselors can also help families and students identify appropriate strategies, resources, and next steps. Office of School Counseling - Holmdel High School  Encourage your child to become involved in school activities, explore unfamiliar opportunities, seek assistance when needed, and view challenges as opportunities to build resilience and confidence. Celebrate effort and improvement rather than expecting perfection, and remind your teen that occasional setbacks are a natural part of growth.

When families and educators maintain strong communication and work together with compassion, consistency, and high expectations, students begin the school year feeling supported, prepared, and empowered to succeed.

Stay Connected and In The Know

September Student Newsletter

Each month, Dr. Requa shares a student newsletter designed to keep students informed, connected, and engaged in the Holmdel High School community. The newsletter highlights important announcements, upcoming events, available resources, and opportunities for students to become involved and make the most of their high school experience. Families are encouraged to review the newsletter together and use it as a starting point for conversations about school responsibilities, activities, and goals.

Engagement, Growth, and Belonging

Student success is built through meaningful engagement, personal resilience, emotional well-being, and strong partnerships among students, families, and educators. At Holmdel High School, students are encouraged to take ownership of their education by participating in academics, athletics, the arts, clubs, leadership opportunities, and school traditions. Through both achievement and challenge, students develop perseverance, confidence, maturity, and the ability to advocate for themselves.

The Club & Activity Fair on October 7 is a wonderful opportunity for students to become more engaged in the school community, explore new interests, and challenge themselves beyond the classroom. By discovering the many clubs and activities available, students can form meaningful connections, develop new skills, and make the most of their high school experience.

Making a Difference Through Service

As principal of Holmdel High School, I am continually impressed by the generosity and dedication our students demonstrate through volunteer service. Their selfless commitment creates a significant and lasting positive impact throughout our community while exemplifying the character, compassion, and spirit of service that define Holmdel High School.

Volunteering provides students with a meaningful opportunity to strengthen their connection to the school and the greater community. Through service, students develop empathy, responsibility, leadership, and valuable interpersonal skills while learning that their time and talents can make a positive difference in the lives of others. Volunteering also creates new relationships, builds a sense of belonging, and reinforces the importance of becoming an engaged and compassionate citizen.

There are many ways in which students can get involved.  Students can access volunteer opportunities by visiting our School of Counseling web page or visiting their office suite, or by viewing the presentation screens throughout the school.

One such opportunity is through our very own community’s HFA.  They are looking for volunteers to help us with our snack stand duties and field duties on the days that we have home games at Roggy Field, which are on Saturdays and Sundays through the end of October.  If any students, or their family members, are interested, can they please reach out to volunteers.hfa@gmail.com.
